Moms, Social Media and their Millennial Teens
I’m an entrepreneur and my business requires me to spend a significant amount of time on social media.
I am also a Mom of a teen and like most of his counterparts, he too, spends a great deal of time on social media.
My top 5 most frequently used tools are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin and Periscope.
According to a new report on the media consumption habits of Millennial teens, conducted by the marketing group Refuel Agency, Facebook Messenger is the most popular messaging app with teens, with Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Kik all among the favorites.
Backed up by similar data from Pew Research, the Refuel report finds that texting is the most popular form of communication among teens – at least, during the school day.
Parenting in this social media-drive, technologically- advanced society, is a challenge that many parents choose not to meet. It’s understandable, as the frequency of change and additions can become overwhelming. I predict that by the next time a report of this magnitude is compiled, there will be a variety of apps and platform added to this list; and possibly several currently on the list will no longer be as popular.
The full Refuel Agency Millennial Teens Report, which includes a much wider range of insights and data into media consumption amongst this group, is available here and is worth checking out.
In addition, here is an additional list of apps that teens and young adults are using:
Texting apps
Micro-blogging apps and sites
Secret apps
Burn Note
Snapchat
Whisper
Yik Yak
Chatting, Meeting, Dating apps and sites
Feeling at a loss when it comes to some of the jargon they use to keep us parents in the dark? Go from being Mom Geek to Mom Knowledge on Fleek. For those already struggling- “On fleek” : perfect, on point, great, etc.
1) Getting loose, being wild and potentially engaging in sexual activity with members of the opposite gender (or the same gender if that’s what they’re in to)
2) Acting crazy due to consumption of large amounts of alcohol, marijuana, molly or other drugs
It can be used as a noun where it is spelled “turnt up” instead of “turned up” as grammatical conventions would suggest. Turnt up is used to described the state of being wild and crazy like someone would be at a party.
FIVE POPULAR ACRONYMS:
IWSN: I want sex now.
CU46: See you for sex.
DOC: Drug of choice
KPC: Keeping Parents Clueless
POS: Parent Over Shoulder
As a parent, do you feel compelled to remain “current” with today’s social media tools, or have you thrown your hands up and left the fun and challenge to your kids?
