I am an entrepreneur currently based in the state of New Jersey. Following Hurricane Sandy, however, I had every intention of vacating the state after enduring ten days without power. My inconvenience pales in comparison to those who lost homes, valuables and sadly their lives. Nevertheless, the thought of relocating did cross my mind, knowing that in my line of business, I have the freedom to be able to work anywhere that is accessible to an airport, and reliable WiFi.
Several people have inquired as to why I remain in New Jersey, considering that it’s not viewed by experts to be one of the best states conducive to entrepreneurship. In fact with reports that more people are leaving the state than moving in, it would be safe to assume that the volume of houses for sale in NJ is on the rise, which makes for great opportunities for buyers and investors.
For now, I continue to operate my business which consists of writing, life coaching for high-achieving women, and consulting with leading-edge organizations.
Wherever you decide to start a business, it behooves you to identify places, activities, and opportunities that have the potential to contribute to your personal enrichment and business development. I am a self-care advocate and encourage all entrepreneurs, especially busy Moms to find time for some. After all, how can you expect others to put you first if they consistently observe you putting yourself last?
The following are my top five “me time” activities that are easily accessible in the Garden State:
Beaches
New Jersey consists of 130 miles of coastline, spanning from Sandy Hook to Cape May. I boast about doing some of my best writing while sitting on a beach, which is why particularly during the months of May through September I am sitting on one at least once a week.
Spa Time
I’m not ashamed to admit that I am a “spa junkie. I prefer smaller establishments, rather than chain businesses; however, I often receive gift cards to these places and gladly accept and utilize them.
Food
Virginia Woolf said it best, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” New Jersey has some of the finest restaurants, and the northern part of the state’s proximity to New York City provides you with even more delicious options.
Networking
I love socializing, and business opportunities that afford me the chance to do so are everywhere in this geographic region. While I can access people around the world via the internet, nothing beats interacting with accomplished business people in person at conferences, fundraisers, and other social and business events.
Shopping
Last but now least, show me a shopping outlet, and I’ll show you a determined woman ready to negotiate. The New Jersey/New York area has some of the best shopping options in the country. New Jersey has the advantage of being one of only five states that do not charge sales tax on clothing purchases.
These are just a few of the self-care “things to do” that keep me complacent here in the Garden State. For the immediate future, this is home. However, of late the coastline of Florida has been calling my name!
