Self-Care and Effective Planning Tips During The Holiday Season

In the words of R&B singer Karyn White, “I’m NOT your superwoman.”
In fact, I have learned to approach much of my life as a juggler. On any given day, I’m juggling many balls in the air and guess what? Sometimes a couple of those balls get dropped. Outcome? LIFE GOES ON. Yet another reason why I prefer to strive for healthy harmony, as opposed to balance in much of my life.

As we begin the winter holiday season, I caution everyone to minimize the feeling of overwhelm. We’re all likely to be slaying it in the workplace, in our businesses, the kitchen, spending time with friends and loved ones, shopping until we nearly drop. You know how we do!

Here’s a suggestion for you that works for me and it’s exactly how I approach my business AND personal tasks:

TAKE IT FROM THE BIG TO THE SMALL

For example: Are you the lucky one responsible for preparing and/or hosting the holiday feast? If so, try the following:

  1. Create a list of everything that you will need to have and do to accomplish your goals.
  2. Then, break it down even further – when will you need them (by what date), from where will you get them, etc.? Include any other important miscellaneous details.
  3. Organize these items in your document and work from that master, as opposed to having tons of little bits of paper/sticky notes that are likely to be lost. If you create your list online, you can store it on your laptop, iPad, or phone for easy, breezy reference.
Consider using this approach for all of your projects, which may include meeting planning, business purchases,  tidying the house, volunteer duties, upcoming school events, setting up the guest room, planning for a special date with your significant other and/or that long-overdue girls’ night out. I used effectively this can be used for overall multi-purpose planning.

A little extra work upfront saves a great deal of time on the back end. And of course, DO NOT hesitate to delegate. Get folks involved, kids included! Delegation is not just a time management technique, it’s also a necessary component of self-care.

Remember, Superwoman is a fictional character, you, on the other hand, are a Super special Mom, whom we want healthy and happy for the holidays and beyond!
