Sadly, upon hearing the news of Julian Bond’s passing today, many people probably uttered the question, “Who?”
I am proud to know that while I never had a personal connection to Mr. Bond’s legacy, both of my sons did. One being a Morehouse Man, as Mr. Bond was and the other, actually being blessed to have a personal one on one friendship with him as an American University student, which he elaborates on below.
I continue to live vicariously through my children. Blessed to know that through my sacrifices and encouragement to follow their dreams, coupled with their desire to be more than average and far beyond a stereotype, they have done so, paving their own paths. With every breath in my body, I will continue to do my very best to set the example for them as their Mom.
May you R.I.P. Mr. Bond
My son’s Facebook post today:
Earlier this year, I saw two of Choate teachers pass away, Coach Paradise & Mr. Noel. Today, I woke up to find out one of my AU teachers passed away. I only got to spend one year with you, but in that one year, you made me feel welcome. I will never forget the first time I met you and you made fun of my old sneakers. I didn’t get to have you for a class or spend a ton of time with you, but in the times I saw you speak, guest lecture or just in passing, you always acknowledged me. Thank you for everything you’ve done!
